
Visitors can view
the world's largest tapestry. The adventures of
famous Tudor Explorers such as Sir Francis Drake,
Sir Walter Raleigh and Sir Richard Grenville are
vividly portrayed in the artifact, called the New
World Tapestry, which is on display at the British
Empire and Commonwealth Museum.
Telling the story
of England's attempt to settle the Americas in the
16th and 17th centuries, it is an embroidery on
an epic scale. It took 20 years to complete and
consists of 24 panels, each measuring 11ft by 4ft.
Is made up of nearly 39 million stitches, painstakingly
worked by 256 embroiderers.
The tapestry depicts
some of the most dramatic events of the era, such
as the Spanish Armada of 1588. Pocahontas saving
the life of Captain John Smith in 1607 and the Voyage
of the Pilgrim Fathers in the Mayflower in 1620.
